May is Trauma Informed Care Month and it's important that we recognize that we all experience some form of trauma at some point in our life. What I try to remind myself and others is that what we go through matters, but how we get through what we go through matters just as much, if not more.
I've been blessed to be able to work with MEE Productions over the years. They have been at the frontlines of promoting, practicing, and teaching trauma-informed care since the early 2000's.
One of the things that we discovered after working thousands of young people all over the world is that even young people that experience the highest levels of trauma, disparities, and disenfranchisement can still find ways to find strength in the broken places. The research shows that about 15% of young people living in the United States are actually figuring out how to flourish even in the midst of traumatic experiences.
So we set out to discover what they had in common and we found 4 similarities among them. They all had a significant connection to:
1. Somewhere (Hope. A belief that things could get better)
2. Somehow (A plan to get from where they are to where they aspire to be)
3. Something (A higher power, higher purpose, or higher calling)
4. Someone (A non-parental, non-judgmental caring adult)
Our goal is to teach young people and the caring adults in their lives how to pro-actively create the life they do want for themselves vs. constantly having to react to the lives they don't want for themselves.
Below is a link to a free resource called "Learning to Thrive. It can help you and them do just that! If you think it's a valuable resource, feel free to share it with as many people as you want!
Here's a real quick video that explains the importance of these 4 connections a little more.
